DETROIT SHOREWAY

As Northeast Ohio reclaims its lakefront, perhaps no other area in the region has better potential for waterfront living and great lake views than Detroit Shoreway.  The neighborhood is home to Battery Park, a new, $100 million development of 328 luxury lofts, townhouses, and single-family houses sitting high on a bluff overlooking Edgewater Park and Lake Erie.  The blocks surrounding Battery Park are currently undergoing a renaissance as private homeowners, sensing the neighborhood’s rebirth, use low interest loans to reinvest in their properties.  Already connected to the lake by two bike paths, Battery Park and the rest of Detroit Shoreway will enjoy some of the best lake access in the city after 2010, when the Ohio Department of Transportation turns the Shoreway highway into a walkable boulevard.

A short walk south brings residents to the Gordon Square Arts District, a collection of art galleries, theaters, restaurants and coffee shops anchored by the venerable Cleveland Public Theatre.  This year the district will receive a $3.2 million facelift with wider sidewalks and public art, plus a new cinema for independent films in the historic Capitol Theater.

“It’s a really exciting time for us,” says Jeff Ramsey, executive director of the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization.
